8/7/13 ** I'm not sure how I've managed to miss putting this fabulously lilting picture book on my "shelf" before now. I read it at least once each school year and read sections of it at other times. This year it became a benchmark text for responding to aggression with kindness. The exaggerated illustrations and hyperbolic comments, coupled with the invented words richly convey the ways in which Mean Jean, the Recess Queen bullied her recess companions. Until the day that Katie Sue invited Jean to play. No one had ever dared. As soon as I read it, my fourth graders vied for the opportunity to join a partner and hear the rhythmic language roll off their tongues.
