5/27/2011 ** The second of two books that I read aloud to my fourth graders today, on their last day of school. This read aloud was different because at least a third of my kids had family members in the room while I read.
I love Seuss's honesty about the ups and downs of life. With the challenges that face many of the families in my school community, I found myself wondering what the adult members of my audience were thinking as I read about being stuck in "the waiting place."
I choked up as I made eye contact with each student and very slowly recited the final line of the book, "Kid, you'll move mountains." This book is timeless.
