2/21/11 ** This book begins with Amy being cryogenically frozen for a 3 century trip to a new planet. She's classified as nonessential cargo and a spot for her on the ship was secured only because her parents were both essential to the expedition. Amy is unexpectedly awakened early and then spends the rest of the novel trying to unravel the secrets that haunt the ship. At the same time, the heir to the leader, known as Elder, is also discovering that the truths he took for granted can no longer be relied on. One unusual touch is that the novel is told through two voices, with alternating chapters in Amy's and Elder's voices. This becomes confusing at times as the first person perspective suddenly switches; however, each chapter is labeled with name of the character in question, so uncertainty can be quickly resolved.

The book is a solid mystery that happens to be set on a spaceship. Those who are hesitant about sci-fi but who like the tensions of an evolving love story or who enjoy 'closed environment' mysteries will definitely enjoy this adventure.

Both my husband and 7th grade niece recommended this highly. After I saw my niece this weekend, I decided that it was time to go ahead and read it. I was intrigued to read that the publisher is marketing the book for both boys (a cover with a spaceship schematic) and girls (the cover shown here with two people close to kissing). I personally found the male voice stronger and think that the book will resonate with both genders. I wish that they'd chosen just one cover that was more neutral.
